    About

Spirit of Hope is a local 501 c3 nonprofit which has been providing housing for housing insecure people in the Carson community since 2010. Spirit of Hope is the only agency providing these unique services which are critical to the Carson City community.

Spirit of Hope addresses homelessness through a model of care based on the housing-first philosophy—that without safe and supportive environments in which to live, the homeless cannot pull themselves out of the depths that led them there in the first place.

After an intake process each qualifying homeless candidate is placed in a home designed to be more than just a clean and safe place to live, but to feel like a family environment. Each home celebrates milestones together, treats each resident individually and addresses their most critical needs, and are most often led by one resident that steps up to take a leadership role. This is why Carson City social service agencies and the court system seek out Spirit of Hope homes to place their most difficult clients. In a true home environment, even difficult clients will often decide to address destructive behaviors and begin to improve their lives.

No other agencies in Carson City provide this type of service for the community. There are

currently approximately 50 residents living in 9 Spirit of Hope homes with a growing waitlist of at least 16 -20 more needing placement, but all the existing homes are full.

Spirit of Hope cannot continue to grow without ongoing financial support to maintain the needs of the organization and its clients. Programs need to be expanded and additional staff is required to properly maintain and execute the quality and standard of care in place.

    Testimonials

"In November of 2019, my life changed, I lost my home, all my belongings, and my 8 cat that I had raised them from babies. Thank God that my neighbors took most of them and my brother took another. Right before all this happened my female cat passes away in my arms from an illness. Since I was very, very depressed I volunteered to get mental help, so I admitted myself to an inpatient mental health hospital in Carson City to get stabilized with the correct medication and therapy. When I got better, I needed a new home, and that is where I found Spirit of Hope.

Spirit of Hope and Ellen Jackson are amazing. This has been an incredibly positive move for me. I have met a lot of fun and supportive people who I know consider friends. I am incredibly happy with my living arrangements and my new life."

What is the history of Spirit of Hope?

Spirit of Hope Inc is a 501 c 3 nonprofit established in 2010. Spirit of Hope provides affordable, clean, sober, and nurturing housing to low income people from all walks of life using a “housing first” approach to solving homelessness in our community.  The housing we provide gives our clients a stable base from which to address the conditions in their life that resulted in them being housing insecure. Currently Spirit of Hope operates 9 rental homes and houses approximately 50 men and women in Carson City.

Where does Spirit of Hope get its funding?

Spirit of Hope has been operating on a modest budget based on the rents collected from its residents.  Rents are determined based on a percentage of their income; the base rent is $550.00 per month which includes utilities, cable, internet and wifi.

In 2020 Spirit of Hope received its first grant from the City of Carson Community Development Block Grant and another from the CARES Grant related to Covid-19 relieve funding.  Spirit of Hope is growing and expanding its presence in Carson City and fundraising activities.

How does Spirit of Hope decide on who lives in one of their homes?

Most of the residents are referred from a local health agency or through the Carson court system. Spirit of Hope conducts an intake with each potential resident to ensure the individual is a good fit and physically and mentally able to reside in one of the homes.  Spirit of Hope does not provide assisted living care therefore residents need to be able to maintain basic self-care day to day task such as showering, preparing their own food, taking medication, etc. There is no time line on how long someone can stay, this is not transitional housing.
